According to Vietnamese history, this pass was a major obstacle to any ground troops attempting to move between the North and the Central of the country. It was known as "Merry Road" during the First Indochina War. The pass connects the two war-torn cities of Hue and Da Nang through National Highway 1.

 There are 2 popular ways for you to choose:

  • Ride from Hoi An or Da Nang south of  Hai Van pass - The most convenient way: Even if you come from Hoi An, you  still have to go through Da Nang and Hai Van passes to get to Hue. The pass is located more than 25 km from the center of Da Nang city to the North. 
  • Driving from North Hue to  Hai Van Pass - Difficult road: The closer you are to Da Nang, the easier it is to get to Hai Van pass. However, if you are in Hue, you can still comfortably visit Hai Van Pass. The pass is more than 70 km from Hue city. The shortest route to this place from Hue is from Hue city center along National Highway 1 to Lang Co town. However, if you go from Da Nang to this pass, you should take the coastal road to see the breathtaking scenery of Pho Loi River, Thuan An peninsula, fishing town, Elephant stream, Bach Ma national park and Lang Co Bay.
You can get there by motorbike, local train, taxi or private car. Motorbike tours of Hai Van pass are preferred by adventurous travelers looking for thrilling experiences.
